Tobias Wolff on Bergman, Faith, Doubt, and Aesthetic Influence.

Best quote from Wolff's short article (read it):

"We like to think of our beliefs, and disbeliefs, as founded on reason and close, thoughtful observation. Only in theory do we begin to suspect the power of aesthetics to shape our lives."

I've never heard of churches showing Bergman films.

Great quote. The article brought back some memories. It's been, like, 10 years since I watched Winter Light. But I still remember many of the details quite vividly. The "changing of seasons" in the background, the pastor's honest struggle with his own faith. Good stuff.

Great article. Like you said, I can't believe a church would show a Bergman film. Probably the most brilliant and philosophically challenging filmmaker.

Next to John Carpenter, of course.

What about Ivan Reitman?

Less a filmmaker than a poet...talk about aesthetic pseudo-religious experiences, have you seen the glory that is Twins?

Twins--Chaucer...is there a difference?

Imagine if Reitman put his craft together with Tyler Perry? Kant would probably rise up from the dead, dragging Nietzsche by the balls behind him, and make the stark claim of objective aesthetic truth.

Gag.
